In Which Casesis IUI Helpful?
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is helpful in casesof unexplained infertility, mild male factor issues,cervical problems, ejaculation dysfunction, and when using donor sperm. It's a fertility treatment that increasesthe chancesof conceptionby placing spermdirectly into the uterus.
How Is This Treatment Carried Out?
In an IUI cycle, a semensample is taken and the concentrated sperm is placed into the uterus near the time of ovulation.
Minimal medication may be prescribed to stimulate the ovaries.
An assessmentis made through ultrasound and blood test. Minimal medication may be prescribed to stimulate the growth of multiple follicles in the ovaries. Thesefollicles will develop into eggs. Endometrial lining and follicle sizeare assessedthrough ultrasound to determine the date of the next visit. An hCG “trig- ger” shot is given to induce maturation of the egg within a scheduledtimeframe and the IUI is time accordingly. 36 to 40 hours later, the IUI is scheduled. A semensample is provided and sperm is prepared, concentrated (washed) and placed in the uterus using a precise tube (catheter).
What Are The Chances Of Success?
On average, the successrate per cycleof IUI is around 10-20%, but this can be higher or lower based on individual circumstances.
How Many Attempts of IUI Can Be Made?
Typically, couplesmay undergo multiple IUI cyclesbefore considering alternative fertility treatments. Many healthcare providers suggest trying IUI for three to six cycles, as successrates may improve with repeated attempts.
